Fire season is heating up

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) firefighters from Port Macquarie fire station are urging residents to prepare for the warmer weather and reduce fire hazards around the home, with a spring clean.
Station Commander Shane Malagre said that spring was the perfect time to clear out rubbish and debris that had built up around the home in gardens and gutters.
“People should clear any clutter from outside the home, such as piles of rubbish and weeds and leaf matter from gutters. Trim back overhanging branches and ensure that nothing is blocking exit and escape points.
“Summer is rapidly approaching and now is the time to make sure, if you live near the bush, your house is ready.”
Port Macquarie Fire and Rescue, in conjunction with Hastings Council, is currently undertaking a series of public education sessions on how to best prepare your home for the upcoming bushfire season.
These information days are designed to encourage residents on how to best prepare their homes from the risk of all fires. The Port Macquarie Hasting Council’s Bushfire Management Officer Melinda Losh will also attend to answer questions on the current plans of management of our parks and reserves.
There will be another education session at the SES building, Central Road, Port Macquarie from 6.30pm to 8pm on September 20. For more information, please visit http://www.hastings.nsw.gov.au, http://www.fire.nsw.gov.au or http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
