Civic leaders Neil Porter and Leslie Williams, volunteers and interested gardeners attended the opening of a community garden at the Port Macquarie Baptist Church on Saturday, June 9.
Fruit trees were planted and a plaque unveiled to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the church.
“The garden links the past with the present and the future,” said Rod Noble, who is leading the garden team of volunteers.
“It is an important way for the church to connect with the community,” said Mr Noble.
John and Janette Tollis and Sharon Nicholson, longest serving church members, participated in the ceremony.
The 50th anniversary cake was cut by Howard Bennett from Baptist Community Services, who gave the church a grant to develop the garden as a community connect project.
This garden is on the Koala Street side of the property and progress can be viewed from that street while driving east.
Raised garden beds, allowing easy access for the elderly and people with disabilities, no dig gardens, and a variety of fruit growing opportunities are some of the garden beds being built. As you drive by, you can watch this garden grow, or you can drive left around a few corners into McIntyre Close and become involved in growing this garden.
The next community celebration for the church’s 50th anniversary will be held on Sunday, August 19.
