The Camden Haven Bombers, North Coast AFL’s newest emerging club, has gained two instances of major praise, not for sporting achievement, but for its efforts in the community.
The Bombers made a pledge this year, in keeping with their growth in the Camden Haven as a sporting identity, that the club would strive to become an even better community citizen in 2012.
A total of 25 Bombers (including parents, family associates and Under 18s players) donned the gloves and grabbed a plethora of rubbish before having a club barbecue.
“The involvement of the Bombers Club was an enormous help and they are keen to come back again next year. It would be wonderful in future to have the help of more community groups,” Clean Up Australia Day co-ordinator in the Camden Haven, Sue Baker, said.
Ms Baker pointed out that the Bombers were the majority of the clean-up workforce on the day and that they were the only community group who registered to assist.
Then, in a major coup, two of the Bombers’ most diligent female committee members gained recognition at the inaugural Camden Haven International Women’s Day Awards Breakfast.
Kylie Wright was nominated for Contribution to Sport and Kim Wiegold won the Business Leadership Award.
The two women were amongst the 11 nominated across the entire Camden Haven.
The Bombers were also represented by outstanding club women Liz Vanderant and Corinne Wilkes at the function.
“This is a big part of what we are going to be about this year,” Bombers 18s coach Gordon Wiegold said.
“As we have players who are at workforce entry age, and as we grow from a junior to a senior club – we want all members and the 100-odd families in the club to realise that being a good sporting representative is one thing, but being a pro-active community citizen is the best way to grow your club and your identity,” Gordon said.
The Bombers are training on Mondays and Wednesdays at Laurieton Oval from 4.30pm and welcome players of all ages from Under 7s to Under 18s.
