Deluge and destruction in Port

Heavy rains caused widespread flooding, damage and disruption last week, putting Port Macquarie and the wider region on the map as a natural disaster zone.
The forecast, however, is for clearer days ahead.
Tom Saunders, Meteorologist at the Weather Channel said, since last Saturday, most of the Mid-North Coast had received over 300mm of rain, the heaviest in June for over 40 years.
“The heavy falls caused rapid river rises, leading to road closures, evacuations and damage to property,” he said.
“Thankfully, the threat of flash flooding has now passed as rain starts to clear, but river flooding remains a concern as peaks head towards the coast.
Mr Saunders said waters are receding over the Mid-North Coast but still rising across the Hunter.
He said the Macleay, Manning and Paterson Rivers are still at flood levels.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, said the State Government’s Natural Disaster declaration status for the Port Macquarie-Hastings and Greater Taree Local Government areas would allow assistance to flood in.
