A report into the region’s roads that was tabled at the last council meeting held in Wauchope only confirms what we all knew – our roads and wooden bridges are in an appalling state of disrepair, says mayoral and councillor candidate, Keith Wilkinson.
The report stated that, in March 2012, Australian Surface Testing, using high end laser units and high resolution video to capture condition data of 2534 individual segments on 1364 roads, has confirmed that our roads are in a fair to poor condition, he said.
“On a scale of one to five, with one being the worst, our roads rate only one to two.
Our roads cannot degrade any more, as they are at the bottom of the scale,” Keith said.
Mr Wilkinson has vowed to fix the situation.
“These roads are dangerous,” he said. “Some of these holes are quite deep and someone is going to get hurt, or worse.”
Mr Wilkinson said tour region’s wood bridges are also in drastic need of repair.
He said an injection of over $70m is required to fix the region’s wooden bridges. Of the region’s 143 wooden bridges, around 33 are considered at high risk.
“The community has been telling council for years to fix our roads and now it’s evident that they haven’t been listing,” Mr Wilkinson said.
“I vow to give a big voice to our community so they are heard loud and clear in every in every office within council.”
