The winning map of the school farm was revealed to students at Wauchope High School following a competition for Year 11 Agriculture and Primary Industry students.
Natalie Schmitzer, who is studying both Agriculture and Primary Industry towards her HSC in 2013, has drawn ‘the winner’ which was unveiled recently.
Wauchope High Year 11 Agriculture and Primary Industry students have been introduced to an innovative farm mapping and management program, encompassing an easy-to-learn software program called FarmKeeper.
Students learned how, not only to map boundaries, objects and livestock to GPS-relevant waypoints, but also considered reasons behind and methods of farm management and the impact farming has on natural resources.
This three-session, hands-on course was funded by the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority (NR CMA) through local dairy farmer group (Dairy Advancement Group – the “DAGs”) and was delivered by local agricultural training organisation, NBA Consulting – The Energy Guys.
Also participating in this venture was Port Macquarie Hastings Council who provided an aerial map of the school’s farm.
Ag and PI students wishing to use their newly formed skills on family farms can apply to the PMHC for use of the maps of their own properties to use under licence and further their knowledge and skills.
