Fire guts tyre hub

A fire has destroyed four vehicles, 250 tyres and a workshop at a popular tyre service in Port Macquarie.
The blaze, which Police believe was accidental, took hold of the premises of JaxQuickfix Tyres on Hastings River Drive after 1pm on Saturday.
Port Macquarie’s NSW Fire Brigade Station Commander Shane Malagrey said the callout came at 1.55pm.
He said the road had to be closed and traffic diverted as a result of the powerful fire, which took four brigade fire service engines from Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Laurieton, in addition to five Rural Fire Service “appliances”, to contain.
He said the largescale operation took full manpower, equipment and 140 litres of foam concentrate to control in about 2.5 hours.
Commander Malagrey congratulated the crew for its tireless effort to secure the area in a short space of time.
He said they worked under dangerous con-ditions with heavy smoke and intense heat from the flames.
“It was a major incident – it took a full compeiment and all our resources to get things under control in such quick time,” he said.
Port Macquarie Police Duty Officer Inspector John Sullivan said the cause of the blaze was under investigation but “at this stage (on Monday) is not believed to be suspicious”.
