Coast cash flows

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has been given a funding boost to help protect and enhance the coastline.
The $37,500 announcement was last week made by Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams and the Enironment Minister Robyn Parker.
“Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will receive $25,000 for a project to investigate coastal sedimentary processes at Lake Cathie,” Mrs Williams said.
“The investigation area will focus on the coastal region adjacent to the lake entrance extending north and south with a particular focus on the beach area adjacent to Illaroo Road and Chepana Street.
“Council will receive an additional $12,500 to further investigate ‘coffee rock’ at Lake Cathie using historic photography to determine long-term rates of sand recession.”
Ms Parker Parker said the funds came from the State Government’s Coastal Management Program administered by the Office of Environment and Heritage.
“The Coastal Management Program aims to protect and enhance our precious beaches, headlands and foreshores,” the minister said.
“It assists councils in making sound decisions about coastal development and infrastructure that reduce the potential impacts of coastal hazards such as beach erosion.”
Ms Parker said 26 new projects totalling $1.7 million had been funded under the 2013-’14 round of the program.
