Helping hand for dads

BEING a father can be a very rewarding experience, but it has its challenges, especially for first-time dads.

Anthony Postle understands this better than most people.
He is a father of three teenagers and has 10 years’ experience working with children.
In his new role at UnitingCare Burnside’s Hastings Family Support Centre, Mr Postle focuses his attention on first-time fathers. He provides them with support and resources, and helps build their capacity and skills as a father.
“A lot of the time, men don’t realise this help is available to them, and sometimes they are reluctant to ask for support,” Mr Postle said.
“But that is what we are here for and it’s important they know it is always okay to seek help.”
The support dads receive isn’t limited to after the baby’s birth. Mr Postle also helps men with the pressures they may face before the baby arrives.
This help includes planning for the birth of a child, relationship issues and the effects of a partner suffering post-natal depression.
Another part of Mr Postle’s role is to facilitate fathers’ groups. These groups enable men to help each other to be better dads.
“The support we provide fathers and families as they face the normal challenges of parenting can help avoid more serious issues arising in the future”, he said.
