Work began to reopen Lake Cathie to the sea last week.
Heavy rain events over the last two weeks have brought the lake closer to the 1.6 metre threshold required for drainage under Port Macquarie-Hastings Council’s Lake Cathie Opening Strategy.
A bulldozer commenced work on the channel at 6.30am before the morning high tide last Wednesday and was completed by
mid-afternoon.
Signage was put in place to advise lake users of strong currents as the lake drains and that lifeguards will not patrol the area.
Council is cautioning lake users over to be mindful of the changed conditions and varying water depths.
