PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has approved the Herons Creek Road site for the new Kew Waste Management facility.
Council had asked for public comment on three potential sites, including the old ‘Taylor’ quarry site on Ocean Drive, land located north of Kew on Herons Creek Road and the existing Dunbogan Waste Landill.
Councillors at last week’s meeting were presented with a summary of almost 30 submissions received during a public exhibition period earlier this year.
Mayor Peter Besseling said the councillors’ decision took into account a number of factors.
“We have adopted the Herons Creek Road site on a range of factors, including access, site layout, distance from residents and developments costs,” he said.
“The new transfer station means waste will be placed in the large bins and transferred to council’s Cairncross facility, essentially ceasing landfill operations in the Camden Haven.”
Council’s director of development and environment Matt Rogers thanked residents for their feedback.
He said the information provided would help ensure the new facility was well used and met the needs of the community into the future.
