MORE than 30 children with type one diabetes were able to let their hair down and play in a safe environment in Port Macquarie on Sunday.
The Australian Diabetes Council has been running “jellybean picnics” for years in Sydney, but this year decided to branch out in regional NSW after a successful trial in Newcastle.
Diabetes eductator Sue Leahy said the picnic proved successful for both children and parents.
“A lot of children – especially in regional areas – don’t know any other kids with type one diabetes, so it’s good for them to see that they are not they only ones,” Ms Leahy said.
“It’s also great for the parents because they can network with people going through the same things they are.
“There are also medical experts around to answer questions and help provide a safe environment.”
The Australian Diabetes Council hired a Sydney company to provide entertainment, which included rides, a jumping castle and face painting.
“All the kids had a ball – we’ll definitely be doing it again,” Ms Leahy said.
