Power revamped

Essential Energy have just completed work on a major upgrade to the town’s power network, with another project kicking off at Flynn’s Beach – both improving the reliability of the network.
Lord Street, Gordon and Munster Street powerlines received a revamp, with four new power poles installed, 29 cross arms changed and 1.4 kilometres of powerline replaced with new aluminium line.
Work has now commenced in the Flynn’s Beach area which will involve the replacement of 1.5 kilometres of powerline along Everard Street, Chalmers Street and Swift Street.
Regional general manager North Coast Brian Mclean said a number of projects were being completed across Port Macquarie to ensure a reliable supply to customers.
“Both these projects are part of Essential Energy’s commitment to ensuring a safe and robust power supply to customers within the Hastings,” Brian said.
“The project, along Lord and Gordon Streets, was completed last week with crews upgrading the network to thicker and stronger aluminium — increasing capacity in the area, catering for future growth.
“The project at Flynn’s Beach commenced last week, with 308 metres of high voltage powerline replaced along Everard Street, from Owen Street to Cross Street.
“Powerline through the Macquarie Nature Reserve from Everard Street to Laurel Street was also changed to CCT — covered conductor thick – which is powerline encased in a protective coating, due to the reserve being classified as a bushfire zone,” Brian said.
“On top of this, crews replaced nine wooden cross arms with fibreglass arms and installed a set of links, allowing crews the flexibility to move power around the network.”
To allow crews to complete the Flynn’s Beach upgrade safely, four planned power interruptions will be necessary — affected customers will be notified by mail of times and dates.
“I apologise for the inconvenience caused by the planned power interruptions,” Brian said.
“Once complete, customers will have a safer, more reliable, robust essential service – one which will cater for future development and growth.”
Weather permitting, the Flynn’s Beach project will be completed by December 2012.
