Bream pops by

Fishing on the Tweed By DAVID SOLANO

I LOVE school holiday time, seeing all the families out wetting a line and with the pretty much perfect weather a great weekend was had by all.
I fished with my mate Ric “Dicky” Creighton over the weekend off the kayaks. Ric mentioned that he was going to tie a popper onto one of his rods, so I did the same, I usually wait until it gets a bit warmer before using poppers but it ended up being a good choice.
We started at the oyster lease closest to Seagulls, the tide was pretty low and the yaks just – and I mean just – made it in there, though I did hit a lot of stuff as it really is a war zone in there. That’s why you don’t see many people fishing the racks, you’ll see them on the outside casting in but to really have a rack fishing experience I find you gotta get amongst it, with pin-point casts it can be a lot of fun.
Well my first cast after about four pops the lure got nailed by a horse of a bream and I was nervous, my rudder got stuck in the sand and I’m fighting this fish in half a foot of water, I could see it’s fins then it started swimming sideways, that’s when I realized it was big. I’d changed my leader from 2lb to 6lb so was able to put some hurt on him which I did. It was pretty cool to land a nice fish in the middle of that mess. He ended up 32cm to the fork in the tail, close to my personal best of 35cm. Cheers.
