Explore the food history of the Hastings at a new temporary exhibition at the Port Macquarie Historical Museum just in time for NSW History Week from September 3-9. The exhibition titled Grow – A Food History of the Hastings will be on show until October 31. The exhibition explores our edible, appetising and tasty food history, what we have grown and eaten locally in years gone by. “Much of Port Macquarie was once market gardens supplying Sydney with fresh fruits and vegetables,” says volunteer curator Debbie Sommers. “It is hard to imagine that there were many pineapple plantations with thousands of pineapples growing at one time and many of our now residential streets were planted out with peas, beans and other vegetables. “For other foods and crops such as oysters our local area remains a major supplier to the NSW market.” The exhibition features objects, images and ephemera from the Port Macquarie Historical Society’s collection.
