The Enigma Quartet

On July 18, at the Glasshouse, the Enigma Quartet will be performing the first of three planned subscription concerts.
The Enigma Quartet was launched in 2006, and is one of the most dynamic ensembles to emerge from the classical scene in Australia. They have been broadcast nationally for Sunday Live on ABC Classic FM and have been selected for the Musica Viva’s Rising Stars program this year.
Marianne Broadfoot – Violin, Kerry Martin – Violin, Shelley Sörensen – Viola, and Rowena Macneish – Cello are the musicians making up this vibrant, young string quartet.
Their program “Outback Adventure” includes works by Mozart, Sculthorpe, and Janácek. The concert com-mences at 7pm and includes a free drink either before or after the concert.
Marianne Broadfoot is well known in our area, as she was the winner of the 2002 Kendall National Violin Competition. Last year Marianne was one of the adjudicators, along with well known Carl Pini and Susan Collins (Newcastle Con), at the 2011 Kendall National Violin Competition Final Round.
One endearing memory of Marianne’s performance at the 2002 Kendall National Violin Competition Final was her performance of a piece ‘Fountains of Arethusa’. Just after Marianne had begun playing this work, there was a very heavy downpour of rain on the tin roof at the Kendall Community Hall, which drowned out the performance!
The adjudicators requested that she and her accompanist, Jeanell Carrigan, repeat the piece — Marianne demonstrated her com-posure by saying that the piece should be renamed The Floods of Arethusa.
Bookings can be made for this concert at the Glasshouse: $45 adult, $120 family (2 adults, 2 children), $35 concession, $25 student, $20 under 18.
Venue: Glasshouse Theatre.
