The community arts group Tenterfield Wintersong will host an ideas forum this month to generate interest for public art and sculpture for their town.
The organisation received Country Arts Support Program (CASP) funding from Regional Arts NSW this year for an ‘Instrumental Sculpture Program’ Flood Piano Project. By commissioning an artist to build a sculpture from a recycled piano, they aim to kick-start an ongoing sculpture program for the community.
The project hopes to generate a broader push for arts tourism in Tenterfield. Organisers have invited Killarney based sculptor Paul Stumkat to facilitate an ‘Ideas Forum’ on November 30.
Paul Stumkat (public artist, sculptor and set designer) has created a variety of sculpture programs for Southern Downs and Councils around Qld. With 25 years’ experience producing vandal-proof and visually stimulating public arts projects, he will facilitate the ideas forum in Tenterfield on November 30.
Popular artist/ arts educator, Christine Porter, will also be a guest speaker. Broaching the topic — ‘Art is for everyone’, she aims to stimulate public imagination by highlighting the wide variety of mediums that public art can take.
As Tenterfield Shire Council is in the process of developing a public arts policy, project organisers hope the forum will be an opportunity for representatives to update the community with a briefing. The forum will also be a place to view designs for the Flood Piano Reconstruction.
All members of the public are encouraged to attend. To discuss the type of art forms you’d like to see in your community, anyone interested, particularly artists and groups from across the Shire, are invited. Tourism representatives and business folk are especially welcome, even if only to join for drinks at the end of the session. Meet the artists, have your input, because art is for everybody.
