Art’s in the family

Alpitye at Port will be holding its next exhibition of fabulous paintings from the eastern desert region of Central Australia until August 5. It will show works by four emerging artists: Jill Kelly Kemarre, Caroline Petrick Ngwarreye, Selina Teece Pwerl and Natalie Holmes Pwerl. Jill, her daughter Caroline and her two daughters-in-law Selina and Natalie, have put together a stunning collection of contemporary pieces that reflect elements of their land and the stories that belong to their country.
Jill, being the matriarch, has been instrumental in passing on her knowledge and experience to this younger generation of women, teaching them the wisdom of their cultural traditions.
The inspiration for the colour and designs in their paintings comes from their observations in the land itself. All of these artists associate with the Alyawarr language and the stories that belong to Alyawarr country which is situated north of the Utopia Region approximately 300kms north-east of Alice Springs. Today they all live on their husbands’ and father’s country Irrerlirre Outstation, a small community in the Arltarlpilta region, eastern Arrerente country, with their children, grandchildren and many extended family members.
Come and visit Alpitye at Port at Shop 1/19 Short Street (opposite Coles). Opening hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm, Saturday, 10am to 2pm.
