In Response

Dr Paul Fidlon needs to check his facts before writing letters (31/10).
It wasn’t a Young Liberals function, it was the Sydney University Liberals Club that Alan Jones made his appalling remarks about the death of the Prime Minister’s father.
No rational reading of the Prime Minister’s speech in parliament on October 9 would indicate that she was responding to anything other than the actions and inactions by the Leader of the Opposition, not those of Alan Jones.
Alan Jones was not ordered by the News Media Council but by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), to receive “basic journalism training”. It was not in response to his remarks about the death of the Prime Minister’s father, but for comments he had made between February 2010 and March 2011. I also note that ACMA was established in 2005.
It is within this litany of factual errors that Dr Fidlon then weaves a commentary containing an entertaining conspiracy theory, but I think a better description of the letter would be “twaddle”.
