LONG-SERVING Melton Fire Brigade volunteer Stephen Hirt started this year on a winner. The generous family man was named Star’s Volunteer of the Year and received $1000 from Werribee Automotive Group last week. Mr Hirt was chosen from a long list of Melton volunteers for his 50 years of service as a firefighter. Upon receiving the award the 70-year-old said it was an honour that a firefighter took out the title and volunteers deserved more recognition. However Mr Hirt said the best reward was simply “helping people out” and knowing the he might have made a difference in someone’s life. 92071 Picture: KRISTIAN SCOT
