A MELTON woman had her pride and joy – a Holden Calais – seized when she was apprehended during a police blitz earlier this month.
The 29-year-old rogue driver was caught during Operation Limit in Wurundjeri Way, Docklands.
Using Automatic Number Plate Recognition Technology, officers from the State Highway Patrol discovered the woman was driving an unregistered car on a suspended licence.
To compound matters, she also returned a positive result in a drugs test and was driving an un-roadworthy vehicle. Police also observed a baby in the back seat.
The woman is set to be charged on summons, while her male passenger, the owner of the vehicle, received an infringement notice.
The Melton driver was among thousands of drivers to be caught out as part of Operation Limit, which was ramped up in the wake of a horror start on the roads this month with 18 deaths recorded in the first two weeks of February.
Since the police crackdown was launched last month, more than 22,000 drivers have been breath tested, including 40 caught drunk behind the wheel.
Police also conducted more than 1000 drug tests and detected 4800 traffic and criminal offences. While more than 1400 people were nabbed speeding and a staggering 502 were caught out using their mobile phones while driving.
Meanwhile, a further 236 people were not wearing a seatbelt, while 267 were driving while unlicensed or disqualified.
Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Robert Hill said he was concerned some motorists continued to take unacceptable risks on the roads, despite the dangers.
“We can’t afford to lose any more loved ones on our roads, so we need the community to come together and put a stop to the bloodshed,” Acting Commissioner Hill said.
“If you break the law and run risks on the road, we will stop you before someone gets hurt.”
