A GRIEVING family is encouraging Melton residents to open their hearts and wallets this month as it hosts a fundraising event in honour of their beloved son.
Ajay’s Pizzeria was launched last year in memory of Ajay Psaila, who died after a tragic accident. The eight-year-old spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital before he passed away.
Now the family and their friends have decided to give back to the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation by holding a fundraising event on Sunday, 24 March.
Close family friend and Ajay’s Pizzeria staff member Colleen Downie told Star the fundraising day was initially going to be a small event but it has now taken on a life of its own.
Colleen, who works at the shop six nights a week and whose children went to school with Ajay, said businesses from across Melton and neighbouring suburbs have put their hand up to donate goods which will be auctioned on the day.
She also said a jumping castle, portable photo booth and face painting services were donated to entertain families on the day.
Local real estate companies have come on board, along with Ajay’s cherished football team the Melton Centrals.
“It’s been a surprising response from the community,” Colleen said.
“People who didn’t know Ajay have put their hand up … not one person has said they want 50 per cent of the money made.
“It shows great community spirit.”
Colleen said Ajay’s death hit the close knit community “really hard” and any chance to honour him might ease their pain slightly.
“This is what the family needs. We know it’s just a day, but if it gives the family a bit of comfort … even just for a day, then we have achieved what we wanted.”
Anyone who would like to donate goods or services to the event can contact Colleen on 0412 218 481.
