Oval boost to fitness

MELTON residents will have the opportunity to get more active, more often after the Victorian Government announced it would provide $650,000 towards the construction of Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Hugh Delahunty was joined by City of Melton Mayor Kathy Majdlik and local MPs Simon Ramsay and Andrew Elsbury to announce the funding last Wednesday.
“Melton is one of the fastest growing areas in outer Melbourne and the new Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve will provide local sports clubs, old and new, the chance to access a range of fantastic new facilities,” Mr Delahunty said.
He said the proposed works, worth more than $2.2 million, will include two ovals for Australian Rules football and cricket, training nets, floodlighting, car parking and drainage and irrigation works.
“That’s great news for nearby clubs and associations looking to train and play longer, and attract even more players, as well as a diverse range of community user groups.
“The new Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve will also sit adjacent to six multi-use tennis courts and an existing children’s and community centre.
“Together they will become a major community and sporting hub for Melton
for years to come.”
Melton City Council Mayor Kathy Majdlik said the council was committed to delivering quality infrastructure and services for residents.
“This development will improve council’s capacity to deliver flexible and innovative facilities that welcome, support and strengthen each resident and improve the overall wellbeing of our community,” Cr Majdlik said.
Cr Majdlik said active pursuits such as netball, tennis, basketball, cricket and football will be offered at the new facility, and passive activities like walking, picnicking and celebrating family occasions will be encouraged in the open space.
Council is about to commence the Town Planning process for the construction of the reserve.
It is expected that seeding of the ovals will take place in Spring this year to be ready for use in Spring 2014.
