MELTON City Council has taken swift action in response to concerns from residents who claimed Melton Waves leisure centre was in a state of “disrepair”.
President of the Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association, Nathan Miles, said on a recent visit to the centre he noticed the grounds had been cleared of any previous litter including leftover food and the change rooms had been cleaned.
Mr Miles said the washrooms available for people with a disability now included soap holders, making life easier for many patrons who frequent the centre.
“It was disgusting before. I mean if you are disabled, you’re not going to be able to pick things up off the floor,” he said.
The improvements come in the wake of complaints from the CCWRA that demanded immediate improvements to the centre claiming it was “in disrepair, unhygienic and filthy”.
Mr Miles told Star the council’s response to the group’s complaints came as a “relief” for Melton Waves customers.
“To be honest we’re happy, but it’s also sad that it had to get to this. It’s an indictment on the council.”
Melton City Council’s leisure services manager Adrian Burns said all maintenance items had already been identified prior to the group’s complaints and were to be addressed as part of scheduled refurbishment works to begin in the coming weeks.
“Some of the maintenance items that were identified in the maintenance audit are being managed by Belgravia Leisure and these works are ongoing, whilst those deemed to be council’s responsibility will have work orders for action placed by the end of next week with works to be completed as soon as possible,” Mr Burns said.
“However, most of the items that are council’s responsibility have previously been identified and are included in the contract for the Melton Waves refurbishment.”
The refurbishment is scheduled to start in the coming weeks and be completed by mid June.
