Free to take driving pledge

MELTON motorists are being encouraged to “take the pledge” and drive carefully on Fatality Free Friday.
To raise awareness of the national campaign, Melton City Council, as a member of the Australian Road Safety Foundation, in partnership with Victoria Police, will hold an event leading up to the Friday on Wednesday 29 May.
Residents will be able to sign the pledge and register online from noon to 2pm at the Amphitheatre in Melton.
Melton City Council’s Road Safety Officer Jan Webb said the campaign is more than just a single day and while the target is to have a fatality free Friday, the ultimate aim is for a longer term community change.
Mayor Kathy Majdlik implored all road users to commit to the cause.
“I urge all Melton City road users to take the pledge as a commitment to yourself, your family and friends to do your best to use the roads safely on Fatality Free Friday,” Cr Majdlik said.
The Fatality Free Friday campaign has continued to expand its operation since its inception in 2007 and is now recognised as Australia’s only national community based road safety program.
During the Melton event on 29 May there will be entertainment from the police band Code One, a free sausage sizzle, marquees set up with laptops for community members to submit online road safety pledges, police vehicle and road safety information and resources and giveaways for those who make a pledge.
Pledges can be made leading up to the day at www.fatalityfreefriday.com/localgovernments.
