WHEN Barb Moller retired from work a few years ago she knew exactly what she wanted to do with her spare time.
Between enjoying taking care of her grandchildren and taking some much needed respite, the Rockbank resident made a decision to give back to the community that had always given her so much.
So she decided to volunteer at Reg Geary House in Melton.
Every Tuesday Barb, along with her friend Elaine Gazelle, spend some time with the elderly residents at the nursing home and love nothing more than putting a smile on their faces.
The pair hosts a quiz each week and told Star it is one of the most rewarding roles they have ever had.
“It gives you a good feeling,” Barb said.
“To see them smile and make them laugh… you can see they really love it.”
Elaine said the voluntary work has given her an opportunity to form close friendships and she looks forward to visiting the nursing home each week.
“It can be quite fun.
“You really get to know the residents and their families.”
And the dedicated ladies have no plans to give up their vital work, vowing to spend many more years helping out the community.
Australia is celebrating National Volunteer Week from 13 May to 19 May and residents are being called on to post messages of thanks to the thousands of volunteers who make the community a great place to live.
