New maps a trail-breaker

MELTON City Council has launched a new application and signs to make walking and riding around town easier.
The new app includes free digital maps, which shows walking and cycling paths in Melton and Caroline Springs, and is available for download on both Apple and Android devices.
The maps highlight the shared path networks and include destinations and landmarks, walking and cycling routes, public toilets, playgrounds, barbecue areas and services and amenities.
The council has also installed 87 shared path signs across the city.
Walkers can now simply scan the QR codes located on the signs to load the maps.
A hard copy version of the maps is also available.
City of Melton Mayor Kathy Majdlik said the introduction of the signs and app was part of council’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of residents.
“Walking and cycling around the City of Melton is very popular among our residents and something that we strongly promote,” Cr Majdlik said.
“We are always looking at new ways to encourage our residents to lead an active lifestyle and these maps will make it easier for residents to explore new areas and trails that they may not have discovered otherwise.”
Residents are invited to the launch of the new signs and application which will coincide with the Family Winter Walk around Navan Park in Melton on Thursday between 10am and 11.30 am.
A lunch will be provided after the walk and there will be give-aways including an iPhone, pedometers and heart rate monitors. To download the GPS enabled maps go to the App store and download Avenza PDF Maps.
