POLICE will be working in overdrive in a bid to crack down on driving offences along the Western Freeway and Melton Highway.
The two major roads contribute to a substantial proportion of injury and fatal collisions reported in the Police Service Area.
Along with speed, police will be concentrating on tail-gaters drivers who fail to keep to the left lane when not overtaking on the Freeway.
The operation will be targeting specific times and days of the week where collision statistics show a sharp rise in the number of reported incidents.
Drivers face fines of $217 and one demerit point for following to close to the vehicle in front and $144 and two demerit points for not driving in the right lane – unless overtaking or unless traffic is congested in all lanes.
Melton Highway Patrol has so far impounded 12 vehicles this year for varying offences including excessive speed, evading police and improper use of a motor vehicle.
