PSOs effective

PROTECTIVE Services Officers at St Albans Train Station have issued 35 infringement notices during their first fortnight on the job.
The PSOs began patrolling at St Albans station on 17 December last year.
The PSOs go on duty between 6pm and the last train service every night, and the State Government has committed to having the officers working at all metropolitan stations by November next year.
A Victoria Police spokesperson said the PSOs at St Albans station issued a total of 35 infringement notices between 17 and 31 December 2012.
These included 11 ticket infringement notices and seven for possessing an open container of liquor.
Three notices were issued for smoking on public transport property, where signs prohibit the activity.
One person was also issued an infringement for littering and a cyclist was penalised for failing to wear a securely fitted bicycle helmet.
Although PSOs began patrolling Sunshine and Watergardens Train Stations this year, the Victoria Police spokesperson said police would supply their infringement data at a later date.
PSOs started at Footscray station during May last year and have issued more than 540 infringements at the station.
Star asked Victoria Police when PSOs might be stationed at Tottenham, Albion, Ginifer, Keilor Plains, Ardeer and Deer Park stations, but was told these dates have not been confirmed.
Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Tim O’Connor said the area’s PSOs have been doing a “fantastic” job.
“They have only been embedded in the area for a short amount of time and already I have received a number of positive reports from people who feel safer with the PSOs present at night,” Acting Insp O’Connor said.
