MEET one of Footscray’s newest paramedics.
Liam, 25, joined Footscray Ambulance yesterday for his first shift, alongside another new recruit Jessie.
The pair is part of 43 new paramedics to be allocated across the state this year.
A further 44 paramedics have just started their training, with the remainder of intakes starting between February and May.
Liam, who hails from Geelong, has moved to Footscray for the position.
“I started a commerce degree straight out of high school, and I very quickly found that I wasn’t interested in it and I couldn’t stand the thought of being stuck behind a desk,” he said.
“I wanted to work with people, I wanted to work closely with people, and I wanted to do something which would allow me to work with a whole different bunch of people across a whole different demographic.
“I also wanted to be able to do something that, at the end of the day, I could leave work and be pretty happy with the job I’ve done.
“It was about job satisfaction, and being a paramedic ticked all those boxes.”
Liam completed a nursing degree, specialising in emergency nursing, before taking on a 12-month intensive graduate program.
As part of the training, he did some work at Footscray’s Western Hospital.
