HAIR today, gone tomorrow. Well, almost.
West Footscray resident Melanie Keuhn will say goodbye to her shoulder-length tresses next month when she shaves off her locks for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
Ms Keuhn, 39, hopes to raise $1000 from the big chop. “To me, cancer affects everybody – if not you directly, you’re bound to know somebody who it does actually affect,” she said.
“Even though World’s Greatest Shave is for the Leukaemia Foundation, any kind of cancer research can only benefit everyone.”
Ms Keuhn is no stranger to cancer. She has an aunt that had breast cancer, while her dad has had a melanoma removed. “I saw the ads on TV and I thought ‘I can totally do that’. I’m looking forward to it,” she said.
“Everybody’s quite surprised that I’ve decided to do this…(but) I’m okay about it, to be honest.
“People have said to me ‘don’t you want to just dye your hair?’ because that’s the other option… in my mind, if you’re suffering from cancer and you’re receiving chemo or radiotherapy, chances are you’re going to be losing your hair and they don’t really have any choice in the matter.
“This is the least I can do.”
Over 125,000 people are expected to join Ms Keuhn next month and shave or colour their hair.
All money raised will fund free services to support patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and blood disorders.
It will also fund blood cancer research to find better treatment and cures. More than 2500 Victorians are diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
