POLICE descended on Sunshine Railway Station last week in a crackdown on drugs.
Last Thursday, more than 20 police officers and a drug-detection dog patrolled the station and surrounding streets from 11.30am to 3pm.
Sergeant Lance Ross from the Sunshine Police Station’s Transit Safety Division headed the operation, which was similar to one police held at the station six weeks before.
Sgt Ross said officers made “about seven or eight arrests for drugs, weapons offences and other street offences”.
The Dog Squad canine, known as a “passive alert detector dog”, also alerted police to around 40 “drug dog indications”, which is when the animal senses someone in the vicinity could be carrying an illegal substance.
The street offences police discovered included public drunkenness and theft.
Sgt Ross said about three people were charged with drug offences and another “five or six for carrying weapons” including knives.
In addition, two people were arrested on warrants.
The Star’s photographer was present at the train station when police detected a young female who admitted she was carrying drugs.
Sgt Ross said commuters at the Sunshine Railway Station were curious about the high number of police present on the day and the operation was a success.
“It worked well here in Sunshine, so you will probably see more in the future,” he said.
“We do get a lot of interest from people, maybe because there are so many policearound the station and people ask what we’re doing.”
