FOR Brimbank glamour girls Marie Cammaroto and Betty Harper the Spring Carnival is all about shoes, bags, hat, and the best dress, while horse racing takes a back seat.
The stunning duo spend months preparing just the right outfight to win over judges on Fashions on the Field and love nothing better than a day out with their partners and girlfriends.
“Honestly I couldn’t care less about the horses,” Mrs Harper admitted.
“I love getting dressed up. I’m in my element.”
Not even torrential rains can bring this pair down, with Ms Cammaroto last week vowing to don a pair of super stylish gumboots if the weather was bad.
“It’s all about the fashion,” the data manager said.
“It’s a good excuse to go shopping.
“But it is a lot of pressure to look good.”
And the beauty said she would never swap her shoes for the more comfortable option of thongs – no pain, no gain.
Spanish-born Mrs Harper concurred. “I will still be suffering to the last minute.”
Both agreed that the fashion at the races should be all about sophistication and tradition, with a touch of extravagance. Mrs Harper even has her own private milliner, her husband, who designs her hat every year.
And she said the mini-skirts should be left to the nightclubs.
The huge Sex and the City fan will spend atleast three hours preparing her make-up and hair on the day, while Ms Cammaroto had already organised a hairdresser and beautician for Derby Day morning.
But this devotion to fashion is not simply reserved for the races. Mrs Harper, a student support officer for Taylors Lakes Secondary College, admitted she would not leave the house “without her face on”. She has a room devoted to her designer shoes and bags.
And what would be the most embarrassing moment for any fashionista? Being caught in the same outfit as another racegoer.
“You just have to stand as far away from them as you can,” Ms Cammaroto laughed.
