But then, he’s never wanted to be.
The Sunshine resident has spent the past 50 years working for the good of his community through his involvement with numerous committees, campaigns and action groups.
In his time, he’s ruffled a few feathers – but only in the quest of a good cause.
The community crusader is well known for his work as Secretary of the Sunshine Action Group, a group that was active during the 1970s and fought to banish noxious trades from Brimbank.
He has also been a member of the Brimbank Transport Action Group and the Sunshine Housing Acquisition Group.
Despite his efforts, Mr Mooney insists he’s never looked for thanks. But recognition has come from an unlikely source.
The Sunshine resident was this month honoured with a Eureka Australia Day Medal, an award conferred by Victoria’s Anarchist Institute to those who have fought for their community in the spirit of the Eureka rebels.
Mr Mooney said he was honoured to have been nominated for the award by Brimbank residents who appreciated his efforts.
“I don’t do what I do for thanks,” Mr Mooney said.
“I do it because I strongly believe that justice should be available to everybody and that people living in the western suburbs should have access to the same services as people living in Toorak.”
Mr Mooney received his award during a special ceremony at Ballarat’s Bakery Hill on 1 December.
