WYNDHAM’S BMX track has finally gotten the facelift it deserved, but is still lacking some basic facilities.
That’s the view of the Wyndham Warriors president Gary Morgan, who heads the western suburbs’ most successful BMX group.
The Heathdale Glen Orden BMX Track in Werribee now has a new ramp shelter, stairs to the start ramp, concrete path around the ramp, landscaping, and a fence surrounding the track, which should limit motorcyclists using the track, as they have in the past.
Morgan said he was thrilled with the cost $ 118,500 project which was funded by Wydhnam Council and the State Government, but said the upgrade was not complete.
“We still haven’t got toilets there. It makes it hard to keep members when you got parents travelling from as far as Bacchus Marsh and places like that, and they get there and they have to go to the events centre or the plaza to go to the toilet. We’re probably one of the only sports clubs in Wyndham that doesn’t have toilets,” he said.
Wyndham Council has stated that building toilets at the track was not in its budget plans.
“At this stage Wyndham City has no plans for toilet facilities the Heathdale and Glen Orden BMX track,” Wyndham CEO Kerry Thompson said.
Mora, who recently won the age 40-44 event at the BMX state titles and saw his son Jordan win the highly competitive 19-24 boys event, said the club had come along way since its inception.
“We’ve only being going five years, and basically when we started it was a BMX track but you would have never believed it to see it, it was like a rabbit track to be honest. It was completely overgrown,” he said.
“We basically rebuilt and redesigned the whole track, and it’s gone from there really.”
Chaffey Ward Councillor Adele De Crescenzo said: “Wyndham City has a strong commitment to providing sport and recreation facilities to cater for the needs of the community. BMX riding is a popular recreation activity; the Wyndham Warriors BMX Club provides the opportunity for riders to extend their skills and talent.”
She said the municipality would update its Skate, BMX and Bike Facility Strategy in 2011/12.
We’ve had a lot of trouble with motorbikes. We actually had a go-kart driving on the track at one point.
