KILMORE snatched an unlikely victory against Nagambie in the Seymour District Cricket Association (SDCA) on Saturday. The Blues, batting first, registered 146, with the dependable Rod McLeod scoring 35, while Thomas McMillan hit 30.
Nagambie was cruising towards victory when it needed just six runs from six overs, with three wickets in hand. But an inspired Kilmore blasted out the lower order swiftly to score a four-run victory, as Nagambie posted 142. Wickets were shared in what was a consummate team performance.
The Blues will play Tallarook in the next round of matches after the Christmas break.
In other results, Broadford looked set to notch its first victory of the season against Eastern Hill before a remarkable collapse. Broadford sent Eastern Hill (7/171) in to bat and bowled with purpose to ensure the target was a realistic one. Jason King’s team progressed to 4/143 with 15 overs left in the game, but were eventually bowled out for 158.
Broadford will take on Seymour in round nine.
Elsewhere, in the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s (GDCA) McIntyre Cup competition, Wallan District went down against Riddell. After winning the toss and batting first, the Magpies collapsed to 3/9 and were eventually all out for 135. Andrew Nicholls was the best of Wallan’s batsmen, with 39. In reply, Riddell (4/137) made light work of the task and achieved the runs with six wickets in the shed. Shane McCutcheon continued his super form, taking 2/25. He now has 12 wickets for the season.
In the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s (DVCA) Barclay Shield competition, Mernda claimed its third victory in four games in a tight contest against Epping.
Resuming at 2/62 in pursuit of Epping’s 120, the Demons experienced some nervous moments, but reached the target for the loss of seven wickets.
Opener Callum Dean made 37, while Brent Bailey contributed 21. Mernda did lose 4/19 at one point, but recovered to score the six points.
The Demons will next face Diamond Creek.
Meanwhile, in B Grade, Whittlesea scored a thrilling six run win against Bundoora. After scoring just 97 on day one, the Eagles made the ball talk on day two, as Bundoora collapsed from 5/82 to be bowled out for 91.
Whittlesea will play Riverside in round seven.
