Hundreds nabbed in roads blitz

BRIMBANK Police caught hundreds of rogue drivers during a three-week blitz of the city’s roads.
Officers from Brimbank’s Highway Patrol unit flooded the municipality’s streets from mid-December as part of Operation Aegis, a state-wide initiative to reduce the road toll.
Brimbank drivers were among the worst behaved in the state, clocking up a total of 700 offences between 17 December to 9 January.
Police nabbed 90 hoons, 46 drink drivers and 56 unlicensed drivers during the 24-day operation.
A further 40 people were caught driving while disqualified, 34 were caught without seatbelts and 31 using their mobile phones.
Across the state police detected more than 38,000 offences, with the drivers in the cities of Whitehorse, Melbourne and Moreland among the worst offenders.
More than 12,500 speeding hoons and 1560 drink drivers were taken off the roads during the state’s biggest Christmas and New Year road blitz.
Brimbank Highway Patrol’s Sergeant Rod Stein said police were pleased there had been no fatalities or serious injuries on the city’s roads during the blitz.
But Sgt Stein said police were disappointed at the high numbers of people continuing to flout the road rules.
Sgt Stein said police would not relax their guard following the end of the operation, with two more planned for the coming weeks.
Officers will be out in force in Sunshine, St Albans and Caroline Springs this week to clamp down on bad driving.
Another operation is planned in February to target drink drivers.
