MELTON’S Peter Kapiris took out the Australian 1/8th mile Doorslammer Championship at Calder Park’s first major drag meet of the year on Sunday.
Driving his 1959 Dodge Saratoga, Kapiris clocked an elapsed time of 4.16 seconds, reaching a top of 182.97 miles per hour to defeat NSW’s Maurice Fabietti (4.24/178.40) in his 2006 Holden Monaro, thus making it two wins from two attempts at Calder.
In the supercharged eliminator final, Jason Maggs, in his Corvette, defeated South Coast Raceway club champion Doina Day in her dragster.
In other results, Joe Gauci (74 TD Cortina) defeated Ali Sead (69 Capri) in the modified street race final, and Domenic Luppino (03 Mustang) defeated Michael McGrath (72 Torana) in the pro street final.
Andrew Voodz (71 LJ Torana) overcame Tony Barbara (71 XY) in the super street final, while super eliminator honours went to Jason Hoctor in his 76 Cortina. Pat Caruso (72 LJ Torana), who was 13th in qualifying, was runner-up. Nick Cavallo in his 2005 Dodge Stratus took out the top eliminator.
Elvis Barbieri’s Capri took out the nostalgia race, while Adam Huntly’s 84 GFX Suzuki was the fastest two-wheeler in the modified bike final.
Calder Park’s next major meet is the Pro Stock and Outlaws event on 12 March.
