The St Albans resident has been involved in athletics for almost three decades, along with various cricket and football clubs and was last year named Volunteer of the Year for Brimbank Council’s inaugural sports awards.
Mr Thornton has been president of the Brimbank Little Athletics Centre for the past four years and said he encouraged all youngsters to get involved in sport.
“As a kid I used to play with my dad in the backyard and I always encouraged my children to get involved in sport,” he said.
“I think if children are involved it gives them a chance in life. It opens up a lot of different avenues.”
He said being involved in sport promoted a healthy lifestyle for youngsters, which was sometimes lacking within the community. And that is why he has spent years dedicating his life to supporting kids in sport – but he’s not in it for the praise.
“I do it because I want to do it. There are a lot of people out there involved in sport, not just me..”
Brimbank Council is once again looking for sports people, clubs and groups who have made a difference in the community. Applications close on 28 February. Anyone interested should contact Brimbank Leisure Services on 9249 4991.
