BRIMBANK residents will help steer council decisions when new advisory committees are established in the city.
The council’s administrators last week voted to set up three new advisory committees to allow for greater community participation in its decision-making process.
The new panels will include a Community Well-being committee, along with an Economic Development and Transport committee and Sustainability and Environment committee.
Each will be chaired by an administrator and include six representatives from the community.
The council has vowed to advertise the positions widely to encourage as many people to apply as possible.
Applicants will be interviewed by the administrators and selected based on their knowledge of key issues, interest and community representation.
Although Brimbank residents and workers are preferred, the positions will also be open to people from outside the municipality.
The committees will provide advice to administrators, identify emerging issues and help form council strategies.
The council hopes the initiative will strengthen community engagement in its decisions and processes.
The committees were recommended during a recent review of the council’s governance framework.
The council also plans to establish two internal committees, including a Finance and Governance committee, and Policy and Strategy committee.
The committees are scheduled to be up and running in May.
