Burn-offs go to plan

Rangers from the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria carried out three burn offs through 35 hectares of grasslands in Sydenham, Derrimut and Sunshine on Tuesday.
The ecological burns were conducted in Sydenham’s Banchory Grove, along with grasslands near Foleys and Mount Derrimut Rds, Derrimut and Foleys Rd in Sunshine.
The burns were planned to control the spread of weeds, including serrated tussock and Chilean needle grass and to refresh the native grasslands.
Parks Victoria ranger Brendan Sullivan, who was in charge of the burn, said the initiative would create the right conditions for the germination of grasses and wildflowers and reduce fuel levels.
“It will also improve the habitat for small animals that depend on native grasses for food and shelter,” Mr Sullivan said.
Mr Sullivan said smoke was visible from Sydenham, Sunshine, Mt Derrimut West and surrounding areas from 10:30am.
“We are aware that some people may be worried when they see smoke,” he said.
“Smoke at this time of year can be alarming and people do need to take note when they see or smell smoke.”
But Mr Sullivan said DSE and Parks Victoria planned to conduct burn offs throughout summer to take advantage of the damp conditions.
“This is unusual but it is the right approach if we are to take all opportunities to burn.”
The DSE advises drivers to take care when driving through areas where burns are taking place, as smoke may impact on visibility.
Anyone affected by smoke can call the Nurse-on-Call hotline on 1300 60 60 24.
