Police were called to a shop in Talintyre Ave in Sunshine West on Saturday morning after the 18-year-old ran from the shop with a flood donation tin.
The shop attendant chased the man down but lost sight of him after he jumped over a fence in Drinkwater Crescent.
After searching the area, police officers caught the thief in Saliba Court.
He was charged with theft after police found the donation tin and money in his possession.
He will appear at the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court at a later date.
