The St Albans couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Sunday and insist they are just as much in love as ever.
The sweethearts met and married in Becse, a town in their homeland of Yugoslavia.
“I fell in love with her in one minute,” Jozef said.
“She was the nicest girl in the area.
“After two or three weeks I asked to marry her.”
But his beautiful bride has a different version of events.
“I’ve always thought he must have been blind,” Maria joked.
“That’s why he wears glasses now.”
The pair were married in 1946 and came to Australia 10 years later, settling in Sunshine North, before building their dream home in St Albans.
“When I told Maria my plan to come Down Under she said ‘isn’t that where the devil lives?’,” Jozef said.
“We were both very young when we got married but she loved me so much and I loved her double much.”
When asked for the secret to wedded bliss the couple are quick with their words of wisdom.
“When I’m talking she has to listen,” Jozef said.
“You just close your ears and nod your head,” Maria said.
They have two daughters, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
