EMERGING cricketer Guy Walker could be representing the arch enemy in years to come.
But in good news for frustrated Australian cricket fans, Walker could also be wearing a baggy green.
The 15-year-old, who lives in Ascot Vale, will travel to the West Indies in November to represent the School Sport Australian merit team.
Walker, who was born in England, was selected after a stunning display over five days at the School Sport Australia championships in South Australia earlier this month.
“I couldn’t believe it. It was great,” Walker said.
The bowling all-rounder, who plays in the second and third XI with Premier club Footscray Edgewater, is this month’s nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award.
The Award is run by Sunshine and Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star News Group. As the nominee, Walker will receive $1000 prize-money donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, with the annual winner announced in June.
Walker recently completed his first season with Footscray Edgewater, during which he claimed 13 wickets, and said it had been a priceless experience.
“I got a few games in the seconds and I played with a bloke who has played Victorian second-grade before, so that was a good experience,” Walker said.
And as a student at Maribyrnong Sports College, cricket is always on his mind.
“That’s a big help. Cricket Victoria set up the cricket program, so we train Mondays and Wednesdays and we play some games against some good opposition,” Walker said.
As for the West Indies, the fast bowler said opening the bowling is his number one goal.
“We play seven one-dayers there, so hopefully I take a few wickets and make a few runs as well.”
Walker is an attacking batsman and aims to score at a run a ball.
With Twenty20 growing in popularity, the ability to score quickly in today’s fast-paced game is a necessary skill.
Walker said he will be looking to consolidating a spot in Footscray Edgewater’s second XI next season.
“The ultimate goal is probably to play for Australia or England.”
