BRIMBANK Council continues to attempt to clean the streets of St Albans.
The council in partnership with the Department of Justice is undertaking regular clean-ups of the 10 most littered sites in St Albans, Kealba and Kings Park.
The litter hot-spots comprise 21 sites, including St Albans Town Centre, Taylors Rd, Kings Rd shops, and various St Albans railway car parks.
The problem areas were identified last year by the community through the ‘Clean-up St Albans’ program, run through St Albans Connect, and the council said it successfully engaged the community to recognise which areas were in need of improvement.
The council’s community wellbeing general manager Kelly Grigsby said community work crews collected litter once a week and the response had been positive.
“The inclusion of local community members on the litter collection crew is expected to increase the community’s sense of connection to their neighbourhood. The council’s cleansing unit has also increased litter collection at the nominated hot-spots,” Ms Grigsby said.
She said the program, which began in August last year, had been very effective at improving the look and cleanliness of the St Albans district.
The program will be reviewed at the end of each financial year. In July 2011 the program will be considered for an extension based on the council’s budgeting process.
