Explosive situation at police station

By Belinda Nolan
THE Keilor Downs Police Station was in lock down last week after a woman brought sticks of dynamite into the station foyer.
The elderly woman entered the police station at around 9.30am on Wednesday, placing a hessian bag containing explosives on the front counter.
The woman told police the power gel sticks belonged to her late husband who used them to construct tunnels and sewers.
After finding the explosives at home the woman decided to hand them in to police.
The incident caused a commotion at the station, forcing the evacuation of the building for several hours while officers from the bomb disposal squad worked to detonate the dynamite.
The station was shut down and all calls from the public were re-directed to the nearby Sunshine Police Station.
It is the second time a Brimbank Police Station has been evacuated in recent weeks, after an arsonist threw Molotov cocktails into the Sunshine Police Station’s foyer on 30 April.
Police say no charges would be laid in the latest incident as the woman had done the right thing by handing the explosives in.
But anyone wishing to hand in explosives or weapons should call police first.
Representatives from WorkSafe collected the dynamite from the station.
Police officers later inspected the woman’s home to ensure no other explosives had been left behind.
