BRIMBANK residents are being encouraged to make their homes greener with a series of sustainable gardening workshops.
The council is hosting a permaculture workshop this Sunday as part of World Environment Day and environmental education officer Jacqui Hillen said she hoped participants would gain a greater understanding of creating sustainable human habitats.
Ms Hillen said some examples of human habitats included vegie plots, worm farms, compost gardens and even having chickens as pets.
She said green thumbs from across the city were already well accustomed with sustaining these types of gardens and could often pass on knowledge to others.
“Brimbank is very multicultural and people have had vegie gardens for years, but have not been able to put a name to it.
“They can now speak to others and get tips.”
Topics to be covered on the day will include an introduction to permaculture design principles, illustrated with topics relevant to home food production and frugal resource use, such as companion planting and caring for the soil.
The workshop will be held this Sunday at the Westvale Community Centre, 45 Kings Rd, St Albans, from 11am. For more information and bookings contact the council on 9249 4716
