PROFESSIONAL and amateur golfers teed off together last month all in the name of charity.
Victorian Open winner David Diaz was among a group of well-known golfers who spent a day on the green at Sunshine Golf Club and helped raise over $20,000 to go towards Challenge.
The state of the art golf course hosts the annual Pro-Am fund-raising event to raise much needed funds for the not-for-profit organisation, spearheaded by Australian golfing great Robert Allenby.
Geoff Ross, head professional at the club, said he first became involved in the event when he heard Allenby speak about Challenge at a private function.
β€œHe was inspiring. I was so touched by what he said and I wanted to make some effort also,” Mr Ross said.
Challenge was established in 1983 to provide children living with cancer and other life-threatening blood disorders, the opportunity to put their illness aside and interact with other children in similar circumstances.
The organisation offers services for families including camps, hospital support, respite and holiday accommodation, parent support and family activity days.
Last year the Pro-Am event saw a $10,000 injection into the charity, while this year funds topped $12,000.
The competition boasts both professional and amateur golfers who play together in groups. Holes are sold on the day and Mr Ross described the experience as β€œa real team environment.”
