ST ALBANS Spurs continued their unbeaten run this season with a commanding 178-point win over Scoresby at Kings Park Reserve on Sunday. A day earlier, the Spurs reserves overcame the Sunbury Lions in a three-point thriller at Clarke Oval Reserve.
St Albans ran over the top of a determined but inexperienced Scoresby outfit, recording a 28.17 (185) to 1.1 (7) victory.
The big win was set up with a 17 to one goal opening half, with Ashleigh Guest and Danni Green contributing well in the first half.
The skilful ball movement around the ground from St Albans opened Scoresby up and ended the game as a contest by the start of the second half.
The St Albans coaches placed an emphasis on discipline and aggression in the second half, aiming to dominate stoppages and sticking to structures.
The Spurs’ intensity slipped in the third quarter, over-using the footy and wasting opportunities in attack. But three goals were added.
The team-oriented performance was capped off with an eight-goal last quarter, with Gemma Jones and Amanda Walsh kicking nine goals between them in the game. The performance puts the Spurs in good stead for a big finals campaign.
On Saturday, the St Albans reserves took on Sunbury in a fierce and close contest in which the Spurs prevailed 5.6 (36) to 5.3 (33).
It was a close game throughout, with the biggest lead being St Albans by two goals in the second quarter.
Much like the round three contest between these two sides, it was a contrast in styles. Sunbury looked to overpower the Spurs, while St Albans looked to use their running play. Neither team gained a big enough advantage on the scoreboard.
Throughout the game, the Lions had the Spurs rattled with their physical play. But Sunbury couldn’t gain an advantage, instead forcing the scores level at three quarter time. The flow of the game continued, but the Spurs had most of the play in their half in the last quarter.
Opportunities were missed by the Spurs, scoring 0.3 to 0.0, but just got over the line by three points.
Danni Hanna and Christina Polatajko were the standouts for the Spurs.
