Spike in road deaths

By Natalie Gallenti
THE latest Transport Accident Commission statistics have prompted authorities to warn people of the dangers of winter driving.
Figures released earlier this month revealed Melton Shire was in the top 10 for fatalities across Victoria and had seen a spike in the past 12 months, with nine deaths since April last year. TAC CEO Janet Dore urged all Victorians to take care on wet and icy roads when travelling.
“The latest statistics are a timely reminder to drive to the conditions, not just at the posted speed limit, when faced with rain, snow and black ice,” Ms Dore said.
The state’s road toll is up five per cent this year.
However it was good news for Brimbank with a slight drop in fatalities, with two in the last year, compared to seven in the previous 12-month period.
Ms Dore also warned motorists of the dangers of travelling to the mountains to kick of the new snow season.
There were 15 deaths on Baw Baw roads in the past year, compared to three in the previous year.
